How to measure for a washer and dryer
A tape measure and five minutes now saves a failed delivery later. Measure the space and the path.
1. Measure the space
| Appliance | Width | Depth | Height |
|---|---|---|---|
| Side-by-side pair | 56–60 in. | about 32 in. + 4–6 in. behind | 38–44 in. |
| Single washer or dryer | 27–29 in. | 28–34 in. | 38–44 in. |
| Stackable unit | 24–27 in. | about 30 in. | 72–76 in. |
Sizes vary by model. Leave about 1 inch on each side and 4 to 6 inches behind for hoses and the vent.
2. Measure the path
- Doorways: most machines need about 28 to 30 inches. Doors can be removed if needed.
- Hallways and turns: tight turns are the most common problem. Measure the narrowest point.
- Stairs: measure the width and note any landing or turn. Count the flights for the order form.
3. Check the hookups
- Hot and cold water valves and a drain for the washer
- A dryer outlet (3- or 4-prong) or a gas line with a valve
- A vent opening in the wall for the dryer
